Charcoal on Toned Paper
Although it is a devastating topic for some, the effect addiction has had on my life has been an extremely profound and eye opening one. As a society, we have come a long way to our understanding of addiction, however, there is one major form of addiction that affects me deeply, that is not seen nearly as legitimately as others. Food addiction is not treated as seriously and as professionally as other addictions, like smoking and drinking, are. We see shows about people struggling with such food related diseases and we laugh at them, having no pity for their conditions. In my piece, I wish to properly equate these two equally as dangerous vices: smoking and eating addictions. The lollipop stands in place for the cigarette, showing that both these things can be just as addictive and just as detrimental to the human body and mind. The bunny ears I am wearing represent new beginnings, a glimmer of hope in the bleakness that is presented in the rest of the image. The rabbit represents hope and a chance to start again, to come back to an issue with a fresh mind and happy body. I fashion myself as a rabbit struggling with such vices these issues in order to instill hope in both myself and the viewer, demonstrating that there is always a light at the end of the seemingly endless spiral that addiction of any form can be. The blurred, floaty nature of how I apply the charcoal to the page is meant to instill an idea of bliss, a dream of an ideal me where I can finally take the lollipop away from my lips and embrace the new me, the one the rabbit promises. This view of myself is idealized, and represents the growth I have experienced though dealing with this addiction and, hopefully, coming out of it with a fresh mindset on life.
